Entry requirements

A relevant 2:2 undergraduate science-based degree is essential. Students without a science-based degree may be eligible following an interview to assess their capacity to acquire sufficient knowledge in the Biosciences or Life and Health Sciences to meet the demands of the programme.

International students are assessed based on typically holding a relevant bachelor's degree with a 2:2 equivalent from a UK-ENIC recognised institution. For international students studying in English, an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) is required, with no individual section below 6.0.

Course content

The Applied Sciences MRes is a multidisciplinary research programme designed to develop advanced research skills across a range of scientific fields. The programme enables students to explore or deepen knowledge in areas including cell and molecular medicine, conservation and biodiversity, healthcare, nutrition and metabolic disorders, and sport and exercise science.

Students undertake independent research supported by academic supervision and develop skills in critical analysis, data collection and scientific investigation. The programme focuses on research design, data analysis and the interpretation of scientific evidence.

Alongside subject-specific research, students develop practical research skills such as grant writing, ethical research practice, statistical analysis and collaborative working. The programme also explores approaches to research dissemination and the responsible use of generative AI in research.

Students complete an extended research project that allows them to investigate a specialised topic within their chosen pathway and apply research methods in a practical scientific context.
